The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Vitebsk is a unique monument of ancient Russian architecture, one of the "most crystalline and canonical temples" of ancient Russia. Written sources have not preserved information about the date of the construction of the Vitebsk Church of the Annunciation. A legend recorded in the city chronicle of the 18th century speaks of the construction of the Church of the Annunciation in Vitebsk in 974 by Princess Olga at the same time as the founding of the city. The analysis and study of architectural forms, construction techniques and fragments of frescoes give grounds to date the construction of the church within the XII century and suggest the participation of Byzantine craftsmen in the construction of the temple and the use of Byzantine construction experience.
