Impressive historic building in the center of Berlin with unique red brick architecture. Unfortunately, the current display of foreign flags on the façade feels out of place and doesn’t reflect the neutral and welcoming spirit this landmark deserves. The building itself, however, is worth seeing for its history and design

The Red Town Hall (German Rotes Rathaus) is a historic building in the center of Berlin, named for its red brick facade. It was built in 1861-1869 in the semi-Renaissance-semi-Gothic style by architect G. F. Veseman. The height of the quadrangular tower of the town hall, built in the image and likeness of the towers of the Cathedral of Laon, is 74 meters. During the Second World War, the building was destroyed; it was rebuilt in 1951-1958 with changes in the interior. On the ground floor there are the Coat of Arms and Column Halls, which perform representative functions. After the restoration, the Red Town Hall housed the Berlin City Representative Assembly and the East Berlin Magistrate of the GDR, which is why the concept of the Red Town Hall acquired a figurative meaning.

An amazing building built with elements of both Renaissance and Gothic in red brick. This is exactly what served for the name of the town hall, which acquired an additional meaning during the GDR years.
