Almaty International Airport has improved significantly in recent years, especially with the opening of its new international terminal. The airport now feels much more modern, spacious, and organized. Check-in and security procedures are generally smooth, and signage is clear for both local and international travelers.
The new terminal is clean and well-lit, with a good selection of duty-free shops, cafes, and waiting areas. The mountain views during takeoff and landing are a beautiful bonus that adds to the overall experience.
That said, there’s still some room for improvement—Wi-Fi access can be spotty, and seating areas get crowded during peak hours. Lounge services are available, but could offer better value and more complimentary options.
Overall, Almaty Airport is now a much more comfortable and efficient gateway to Kazakhstan, and it continues to move in the right direction.

Worst service ever I have experienced! I asked three staff if the items I was carrying allowed to be taken in a hand luggage, all three confirmed. But at the end the customs officer told me to either leave my item at the airport, so next time when I arrive I can get it (so silly, how I would ever know if I come back to Almaty), or dispose it there at the airport. I requested if it was written and confirmed anywhere, and published so that passengers could see and not to carry such item in a hand luggage. They said it is their internal rule.
At the end, they made me to pay for extra luggage and then submitted it for a baggage carry.
The employees were very rude, except the one in the customs office. Very disappointed!!!

We all wait for the new terminal which is promised mid 2024 .. the construction time made our life in & out of the city even more miserable.
Poorly planned, poorly equipped, lots of things miss logic. At least border control got some line tapes to shape a que.
Smoking in restrooms and business linge international departures are more fit for Qazaqstan in 1992 than today.
Not enough buses and staircases for boarding/offboarding planes. Roads that buses drive sometimes miss pavement.
Again, you can withstand all that to visit a beautiful city of Almaty and we are looking forward to new terminal soon.
