One of the most interesting places in Almaty is a unique wooden cathedral that withstood the famous Kemin earthquake of 1910, which destroyed thousands of homes and buildings in the city. The temple, built of Tien Shan spruce, stood, only its bell tower bent and swayed like a tree trunk. By the way, the writer Yuri Dombrovsky described this temple in his novels. The temple is considered the second tallest wooden church in the world! He makes an amazing impression, I don't want to leave him.
The former Pushkin Park around it has been renamed the park of 28 Panfilov heroes. There are very sociable squirrels in the park (don't forget to bring nuts with you!)
To visit Almaty and not see the Ascension Cathedral is a crime against yourself and humanity!!!

An ancient cathedral that withstood an earthquake. One of the world's tallest wooden buildings. The world's tallest Orthodox wooden church. And this is in an earthquake-prone place. It was built in 1903. A well-groomed, good choir. Amazing icons.

At that time, it seemed absolutely incredible to build a building above a couple of floors, the city of Verniy (as Almaty was then called) was constantly shaken by terrible earthquakes, completely sweeping away city buildings. Nevertheless, in 1904-1907, a beautiful wooden temple was built, and the height of its structures reached 54 meters, which seemed completely unthinkable...
From 1929 to 1985, the cathedral was used as the building of the Central State Museum of Kazakhstan.
Then, as a concert and exhibition pavilion. And in 1995 it was returned to believers.
An incredibly beautiful temple . Around the "temple there is a huge urban garden, poplars, oaks, pines, linden trees grow, cheerful small shrubs rustle, iris and roses bloom, fountains beat."
It was already night and I was not destined to get inside. But the fact that to see such beauty and the courage of engineering thought did not stop before the idea of seeing and capturing the temple.

Amazing, majestic, Holy Cathedral. While we were living in Alma Ata, I came to this cathedral for services, for unction, for Communion.
His story is interesting. Built without a single nail. It survived the strongest earthquake of 1911. This is the only high-rise building in the city that did not collapse during that earthquake. In Soviet times, the cathedral was closed for worship, and a museum of local lore was organized in it. After that, he was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. Thank God for everything!
