The National Museum of Natural History was established by Convention in 1793 on the basis of the Royal Garden of Medicinal Plants, founded by Louis XIII in 1635. In the 19th century, the museum's collection was significantly expanded and it was decided to build a new zoological gallery under the direction of Louis-Jules Andre. It was opened in 1889. The glass roof allowed for natural lighting on all floors.
