A castle that has hosted many civilizations that have made Anatolia their homeland. For this reason, there are places of worship belonging to various religions around it. Excavation works are still continuing on it. When the excavations and restoration are completed, as well as when all the surrounding structures come to light, there will be a magnificent open-air museum. Various legends are told about the Harput Castle. According to a rumor, due to the water shortage experienced during the construction of the castle, it is said that milk was used instead of water to prepare the mortar by order of the ruler of the time, so the castle was called “Milk Castle”.
The contribution of the repairs made during the Artukluk Period to the preservation of Harput Castle, which consists of two parts, the inner castle and the outer walls, can be preserved to this day as an original structure. The castle was later repaired during the Dulkadiroğulları, Akkoyunlu and Ottoman Periods. The outer walls of the castle have been completely destroyed. The castle, which is built on Yalcin rocks and is very difficult to besiege, is a large neighborhood with a hospital, granary, mint, water cistern, arsenal, mosque and many civilian buildings.
