It's a good place. It is interesting to visit with children. This is not a zoo, you can feed monkeys, so it's better to take apples or bananas with you. They are happy. But be careful when feeding. They take treats with pleasure. But they can scratch.

We liked everything. The cells are old, of course, but this is not surprising. Otherwise, the workers take care of, wash, no smell. There are a lot of babies, which means good conditions for reproduction. You can feed, we bought food at the entrance, although we took bananas with us, we decided to support the nursery. My husband was scratched by hamadryad, so you need to be careful with them.

A good nursery, the monkeys are well-fed and well-groomed. Of course, financing and repairs are needed. It can be seen that the animals are taken care of by the staff, they are washed and cleaned in the enclosures as they become dirty. Both the cleaning process and the feeding process were observed. There are many monkeys with cubs, which means that conditions for life and reproduction have been created. Since this is a place with a lot of animals, the smell is naturally present. Monkeys can also fight with each other - this is their usual behavior, some have wounds. We got a lot of positive emotions from communicating with animals. Their fur is glossy, they are in perfect order, they have enough food, plus tourists delight them with fruits.

A legendary place in the city! A must-visit! Here is the only monument to a monkey in the world. A large institute of hematology in the USSR. This is our story. It's better for hypocrites, lazy people and snobs not to come up here. This is a place for educated and interested people.

3 types of monkeys in all cages. Devastation and unsanitary conditions. A steep and long uphill climb. Downstairs you can take a taxi for 150 rubles. They also sell food here, although there are signs everywhere that it is forbidden to feed animals. It's not worth wasting time on this.

The museum itself is not working. The buildings are in poor condition. Aviaries and cleaning are at a good level. But think about why they live here and how they die. People are in their debt, so they need to come and explain this not only to children, but also to adults.

My mother and I read about this place in early childhood - there was a wonderful book with black and white photos about different pets who lived at the institute. I even remember one of the names - Lemon :). And how people took care of them, saved them, treated them, and made friends... I wish I could republish it!!!
I was there for the first time back in the Soviet 80s as a girl, I remember standing in a long queue, waiting for an excursion, and how I really liked everything there, There were many different Monkeys and everything was very well maintained.... the institute had funding. And there were a lot of tourists.
The next time I turned out to be in November 2021, I definitely wanted to visit the monkey house, because the whole trip turned out to be an interweaving of current emotions with childhood memories. The lack of money and financing is sadly visible inside (however, this is all over Abkhazia). but when we got from the cages to the building, I realized that the maximum is given to the animals, and they don't even think about their own conditions, there hasn't been any repairs there since the time of Tsar Pea... Then I read that the employees literally bought something for their money to feed and warm the monkeys during the winter. And the more tourists there are, the more they spend in the monkey house, the better it will be for monkeys, well, for people to help.
The fruits that were sold at the entrance were mostly mixed so that 70% were feijoa, which the monkeys did not really like, but they enjoyed eating grapes, pieces of persimmon, apples, which were few in the mix, so I was glad that we had several apples, grapes and pears in our backpack for a snack so we fed the "kids" with the right food more. And from the leftovers in the cages, I realized that they also crunch carrots and cabbage with pleasure! So you can take delicious fruits with you, just cut them into pieces if you don't want to buy it at the kiosk, believing that someone is profiting.
Complaining about grabbing food and not only is stupid, these are animals after all! But it's worth paying attention to who can be given food only from a stick, who to throw, and who is careful in itself... so I could give grapes to someone right from my fingers, and they took it from me very delicately (but I do not advise repeating after me, because I myself am always responsible for my actions and I will not complain!)
Summary - the place is mandatory to visit, at least to feed the monkeys and contribute to their maintenance!

This is not a petting zoo, not a circus. It is not worth coming here to get aesthetic pleasure. If you want to help the pets and the staff of the kennel, they will be waiting for you. You can grab bananas and corn sticks.
They bought sunflower seeds from an employee for 100 rubles.
There is a smell, but otherwise it is clean (as much as possible.

The monkey house is old, it has not been repaired for a very long time. There are many rhesus macaques, baboons, Japanese macaques, a pair of black crested mangobeys and a pair of feline lemurs. Monkeys are mostly calm, but there are also aggressive ones, baring their teeth. There is a not very strong smell of excrement near the aviaries, the squeamish will not like it. There is an opportunity to feed the monkeys. The food costs 100 rubles, mainly watermelons and carrots. Admission costs 400 rubles for adults, payment is in cash only. We were in September 2023. Everything was good.

I will not repeat about repairs, roads, dirt and the tired condition of the so-called monkey cage fund, this is a big question for Abkhazia, for local officials, and mentality. They don't appreciate, they don't value, and it's not about subsidies or lack of financing. Monkeys are cool, it's a pleasure to feed, the main thing is to be careful. By the way, there are severely minded individuals who can abruptly snatch a vegetable or fruit and scratch their hand with a claw. The children liked to feed, bought food at the entrance in bags of 100 rubles. It seems that animal nutrition is maintained precisely at the expense of tourists. We were on February 22nd, there were visitors. By the way, everyone starts walking on the left and then in a circle, so it seems to me that the last cells do not get it) take a note and start walking on the right. Support macaques and hamadryas with baboons with a ruble, they are not to blame for the fact that a man put them in a cage for life. But another life on this planet was meant for them.

We went to the nursery today.... The impressions are bad. There has been no repair since the Soviet era, well, except that the plumbing from plastic pipes was carried out in cages. That's all. Almost all the enclosures are old with fallen off ceramic tiles, there are no sidewalks, you have to go and look at your feet so as not to stumble. In one of the central (new enclosures), one green monkey had a wounded paw, there were many bloodstains on the floor, an employee said this, she nodded her head and went the other way. The employees have some kind of indifference, which is why the nursery is in such a pitiful state. The ticket price is 250 rubles for adults, 50 for children (7-12 years old). Given that there is not much entertainment in Sukhum and many people go to the nursery for an excursion, the flow of people is not small, they could have improved this institution or at least cleaned up. I didn't take a photo, it's a pathetic sight.

I divide the review into 2 parts, because it concerns completely different aspects.
1. The organization of all this. This is taking money from people. They don't do anything for visitors and the animals themselves! The paths in some places are just dangerous! There are holes, there is no asphalt, there are holes under your feet that you can fall into at once! Be careful! The cages are also a great sight. This is not the Moscow zoo .....
2. The inhabitants themselves. It's just lovely! It's a pleasure to watch them and communicate with them! It is not worth looking into their eyes, it causes discontent and indignation. And if you blow on them, they can rush. It's funny, of course, but it makes monkeys nervous. The place is certainly worth a visit, but it would be better not to have it. I feel very sorry for the animals.

Some of the enclosures are relatively new and clean, some are old and it stinks terribly. The monkeys look well-groomed. If you decide to feed the monkeys (the food is for sale), you need to be careful - they grab the food quickly. It is better to join the tour - they tell you in enough detail about the work of the institute and about the inhabitants of the nursery. If you walk, you will have to climb a long and rather steep staircase, but along the way there are several playgrounds with benches for relaxation. The staircase itself is in acceptable condition, looks clean and well maintained.

Personally, we did not go there, neighbors with children went there. We arrived with an injury! As they told us: they sell food for monkeys at the entrance. they bought and began to treat the animals. You put a treat on a stick and hand it to our younger brothers. One monkey apparently decided that it was disrespectful to put food on a stick to her, and the child was not very far away, grabbed his hand and bit him. The parents took the baby to the hospital, where they sewed up the wound and bandaged it. So, be careful, keep an eye on your little ones!

We were in August 2019. There are few monkeys, and more than half of them are sick with some kind of growths. At the very beginning, everything is clean, the monkeys are full, they don't even eat what they are given. If you go further, hungry monkeys rush at each other, take food away, some eat sawdust. The smell is disgusting. I really wanted to visit this place, but when I did, I was not thrilled. The children were upset. I would never visit this place again, especially with children.
