One of the popular attractions of Abkhazia is the New Athos Cave. This is a unique gem of nature, which both adults and children will enjoy visiting. It was opened in 1961 and has been accessible to tourists since 1975. This is not the largest cave in Abkhazia, but it is one of them. The total length is more than 3 kilometers, but less is open for excursions. The depth of the cave is 183 meters, with a cavity volume of 1 million m3. The air temperature in the cave remains almost unchanged throughout the year, at about +14°C. Therefore, when visiting the cave, it is better to bring a blouse with you. The cave has 4 entrances, 3 of them artificial. The original entrance, through which they entered here for the first time, is located in the ceiling of the Anakopia hall. On the surface, it adjoins the village of Esher and looks like a deep sinkhole. Guided tours take place daily, and they are very interesting and really informative here. It all starts with being sent underground on an electric train, just like in the subway. By the way, it's a little stuffy on the train, so bring a bottle of water with you. The cave consists of 9 halls, 6 are available for visiting. It is cool, damp, and dark here. The backlight turns on, it becomes more mysterious, but the photos are still not very good quality, unless you are, of course, a professional. There are iron bridges between the caves, which are a bit slippery. The largest hall of the cave is the Mahadjir Hall. Its length is 260 meters and its height is up to 50 meters. There are two lakes in the Anakopia Hall. The first one is "Anatolia", with an area of 1000 m2, a depth of 26 m, and a water temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. The second "Blue Lake" is 1250 m2 in size. Very beautiful, pale blue. Charming stone flowers and figures. Stalactites, stalagmites, bottom, top..... room for imagination. Surprisingly, there are living microorganisms in the cave. Bacteria, fungi, and some insects that have adapted to the conditions of total darkness. Overall, this is a very interesting and informative place. Not far from the cave is the Novoafon Monastery. A visit to New Athos in Abkhazia will definitely not pass without a trace and is useless.

I will not describe the halls and the passages to them. You have to be there and watch it yourself. This is a truly unique and interesting place.
Regarding the microclimate of the cave, it is worth saying that you need to dress warmly – the temperature here is no higher than 14 degrees Celsius all year round. Hiking shoes should be as comfortable and non-slip as possible. Yes, and the humidity in the cave is very high.

The scale of the cave is really impressive, I recommend everyone who came to Abkhazia to visit the tour. The guide tells an interesting story, turns on the backlight and folk music. Of course, most of all I remember the first "hall" with an underground lake - something unique and seemingly mysterious...
The only downside is that you can't walk around and see enough - the group has gathered quite a large one and the tour itself does not include free walking through the halls of the cave. I would really like to enjoy this incredible attraction to my heart's content.

This is the largest cave in the Western Caucasus. The topmost level is 170 m, the lowest is 36 m. It is about two million years old. The cave is located in the depths of the Iverskaya (Apsara) mountain. It was opened in 1961. It has been operating as a tourist attraction since 1975. The tour takes you through six of the nine halls. The route is 1.4 km long and lasts 1.5 hours. Through an artificially pierced tunnel 1,360 meters long, a miniature train will silently take you to an amazingly beautiful underground palace with lakes, stalactites and stalagmites. Lanterns hidden in the crevices of the rocks create an amazing picture. Each subsequent hall is more beautiful than the previous one. The lowest hall "Abkhazia" has impressive dimensions: length — 150 m, width — 50 m, height - more than 20 m. Two underground lakes, Anatolia and Goluboe, look at the surrounding world with fabulous green "eyes" in the light of spotlights. Next is the highest hall in the cave "Moscow". Its height is up to 70 m. Bats live here. The walls move apart and give way to a small but very beautiful Sukhumi hall. Behind it is the Canyon Hall. It's a giant underground gorge. The next one is the Iveria music hall itself. A person's voice or musical note, sounding under his dome, acquires amazing richness and depth. A huge three-meter stalagmite stands like a sentry in front of the entrance to the next hall of Tbilisi. At the end of the tour, the majestic stone waterfall Apsny ("The Land of the Soul") opens to the eye. Its height is 20 m and its width is 6 m. There will be enough impressions for many years. It is cooler in the cave than on the surface: the constant temperature is +11 degrees. Therefore, it would not be superfluous to grab light outerwear.

A wonderful tour. An incomparable guide. Beautiful views. Of course, it is not very convenient to take photos and move around the cave at the same time, since the road is slippery. When visiting, you need to take this into account. If you forget warm clothes, do not worry. At the entrance, you can use blankets (100 rubles). I definitely recommend visiting this natural monument.

They let you in according to schedule, first you get into the subway, the first car is driverless, so if you sit in it, you can see how you drive through the tunnel. Then you get straight to the first hall, the duration of the tour is about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

We stopped by in passing and were very impressed! For 700 rubles (cash only), you are first taken deep into the mountain, from where you have only one way- 80 minutes to overcome 1,500 meters of the cave trail with stops in the halls. If you get a cheerful guide, then everything will fly by very quickly. The thousand-year history of caves and you! What could be more beautiful?! I'm not posting photos- visit for yourself!)
P.S. they ask you to pay 50 rubles for a photo at the entrance, but no one is interested in it inside. So, if you don't mind, you can add it))

The cave is located in Abkhazia, New Athos, near the New Athos Monastery. I visited this cave according to the program of the Summer Evening tour in Gagra in early September. The cave itself is a large length of about 2 km, there are 11 halls in the cave, but only 8 halls are possible for excursions. You need to move around the cave on metal bridges. The temperature is about 14 degrees, so our guide told us. There are 2 beautiful lakes in the halls, as well as stalactites, stalagmites and stalacnates of all sizes on the walls and ceiling of almost the entire cave. The cave is delivered by a local electric train. I recommend you to visit!

The New Athos Caves are a unique place, a must-visit if you happen to be in Abkhazia. It is interesting and atmospheric. But get ready for the fact that it will be stuffy on the train, and it will be damp and cool in the caves themselves. And try to prepare for the rudeness of the cashiers. They don't even try to be nice and don't remember that they work in a cultural institution. By the way, it's pointless to pay 50 rubles for a photo shoot if you don't have the skill of reportage shooting in pitch darkness. The one who sits in the booth where they sell tickets for the shoot knows this very well, but does not talk about it. But it talks obscenities to women.

We visited the cave in November 2024. The ticket office opened at 10:15 a.m., and they started letting people into the cave at 11 a.m. 50 people started running at once.
The cave was impressive in size, I had never been in a cave before.
This one was opened in the 70s. The guide told me interestingly that they even checked the acoustics in one place-they asked someone to sing.

We arrived at 10.10, took tickets for 10.40, there was almost no queue. The cave itself was amazing in scale! Very beautiful. But! I didn't have enough time to look at all the beauties as the group was moving quite fast.
But I'm thrilled!
P.S. Dress in long-sleeved clothes and pants, and sneakers or shoes with a closed fixed heel, it's slippery and steep descents and ascents. The temperature in the cave is 11-14°, and 100% humidity.

Llc recommended this place to us and we were delighted!
We went in rainy weather (we are not the only ones who are so smart), stood in line at the ticket office, took tickets for the tour (the nearest ones were only in 2 hours and 40 minutes).
While we were waiting, we had lunch in the nearest dining room, then went up in the building itself and drank coffee with a beautiful view (and the tubes with condensed milk were very tasty), walked a little around the area (but it was difficult to do it in the rain)
But then we had a great time in these dungeons, we only had time to admire the scale) we were very lucky with the guide - the woman told us interesting things!

You will be taken to the caves themselves in trailers and you will visit 6 halls. Music will be played during the tour.
Interestingly, in ancient times, entire nations hid in caves from enemies. And this is actually possible, because our 100-person tour traveled freely underground. And after you've been there, you'll see for yourself.

I must say it's not mine, I'm still talking about greenery and waterfalls. It's definitely worth a visit. Take a blouse for children, or rent blankets for 100 rubles. Adults are also cold at first, then they got used to it. It is better to come by 9 a.m. by 9:40 a.m. you will come in. There are more people than people :). The trailers (metro) are cramped and stuffy at first, during the trip 3-4 minutes are normal, but my son managed to get seasick. It's good in the cave itself, the guide tells everything well. There are only 6 halls, sometimes concerts are held there (I think it's very cool). The walk is about 1.5 hours. Still for amateurs.

We arrived in N.Athos at 12 o'clock, there was a huge queue, we stood at the ticket office for 40 minutes, but it turned out that we would be able to get into the cave only by 16:10. But we were not upset and went for a walk around the city. We visited the waterfall and had lunch in the dining room. By 15:30 we were there. The heat was unbearable and it was not very good with two children. Fans were spinning in the "waiting room" of the cave, but in the heat of + 40 they were of no use. When it was time for the tour, we went into the hall and were taken to the cave itself on small trailers (2-3 minutes drive). When the temperature came out, of course, it changed. They put on their sweatshirts. The tour lasted about 20 hours, but most of the time was spent moving from hall to hall. Of course, the scale of the cave is amazing, very majestic and beautiful. The tour was a bit boring, but overall not bad. The fact that they write that you do not need to buy a photo permit is the pure truth. No one was tracking who was filming what, because the group was quite large and most likely it was simply impossible! I definitely recommend you to visit

I did not know that such a miracle was available to us. I regret that we did not get here earlier, although there was an opportunity - we did not take warm clothes with us, we did not take the risk. An interesting place, a miracle of nature! An underground train takes you to the cave itself. The tour lasts 2 hours. Be sure to take jackets, as it's cold inside. We were in the cave twice at different times of the year - in spring and summer. When it rains, the cave is wet, puddles, the level of the underground lake rises. You need to walk carefully, the road is slippery. The guide tells a very interesting story, plus they include national music. The acoustics in the cave are amazing. At some point, the lights were turned off, we were in complete darkness and silence. Before that, we were warned about this. To make you feel how it can be...when vision and hearing are completely turned off, and you stop navigating in time and space. Impressions from visiting the cave were only positive!

We, tourists from Russia, would like to share our impressions of visiting your complex. Today, July 21, 2024, with sunny weather and an air temperature of about 30 degrees, we are faced with a number of inconveniences that, in our opinion, can be easily eliminated.
Firstly, tickets are sold only for cash. This raises doubts about the transparency of the administration's work and infringes on the rights of customers who prefer to pay with a bank card. In the modern world, such a scheme raises suspicions of the unscrupulousness of the administration and possible embezzlement from the budget of Abkhazia.
We are confident that the introduction of an online ticket sales system will significantly improve the quality of customer service. This will allow tourists to quickly and effortlessly purchase tickets for excursions, as is done in cinemas. Modern programs and technologies make it easy to install such systems, which will make the ticket purchase process convenient and transparent.
Today, my children and I stood in the heat for more than an hour, waiting for the opportunity to buy tickets, and we will wait another hour for the tour to begin. The tickets you issue can be easily forged on any printer, which also raises doubts about the integrity of the system.
For Abkhazia, the introduction of online ticket sales will be a simple solution that will allow you not to lose customers and become a more modern country. We were surprised by the lack of cash registers, which looks gangster-like and raises questions about the honesty and loyalty of officials.
We hope that your administration has smart and honest people who are ready to improve the quality of service and make your complex more attractive to tourists.
