The visit to Novoafon was unforgettable due to the many unique places. The New Athos cave impressed with its scale and amazing stalactites and stalagmites. The tour was well organized, the guide shared interesting facts and stories. Quad biking at Quadro Pedro added adrenaline and gave the opportunity to explore the picturesque surroundings. It was a great addition to my journey.

In 1822, Hieromonk Theodulus from the Peloponnese (Southern Greece) gave a small icon of the Mother of God "Deliverer from Troubles" to his disciple Martinianus as a blessing. Martinianus led a wandering lifestyle, moving from village to village, sometimes stopping in deserted places to pray. He wore the gift of the teacher on his chest, having built a small case.
After growing old, Martinianus settled in the Russian Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos (Greece). At that time it became known that a Russian monastery was being built on the Caucasian coast of the Black Sea, imitating St. Athos, New Athos in everything. Some monks from the Panteleimon Monastery went to arrange a monastic life there. Imbued with love for the new Caucasian brotherhood, Martinianus bequeathed after his death to send her a miraculous "Deliverer" as a gift.
In 1889, the icon was accompanied by the abbot of the New Athos Monastery, Archim. Hierona arrived on the coast of Abkhazia, where the Mother of God was given a solemn welcome.
At that time, Russia was shocked by the disaster that happened at Borki station (near Kharkov), when a train carrying the Imperial Family crashed. By a miracle of God, none of the royal personages were injured. Emperor Alexander III was returning from a visit to the Caucasus, where he rested and visited the New Athos Monastery.
In honor of the miraculous deliverance of the Royal Family from death, the celebration of the arrived shrine was established on October 17, the day of the disaster. As soon as the liturgy was served that day, a storm rose in the sea, throwing ashore a lot of fish, from which they prepared treats for the worshippers.
Since 2011, the Russian Orthodox Church HAS NOT BLESSED Orthodox pilgrims to participate in the sacraments on the territory of the monastery, buy candles, souvenirs, and make donations.
The New Athos Monastery ended up in the hands of persons who dissolved their unity with the Russian Orthodox Church.
Hieromonks Dorotheus (Dbar) and Andrei (Ampar) were BANNED from the sacred ministry for their schismatic activities.
