Great Choral Synagogue, Grodno
A functioning synagogue in the center of Grodno
The current building of the Great Choral Synagogue was built by Ilya Frunkin in 1902-1905 in one of the varieties of eclecticism — Moorish style on the foundations and using the walls of the previous synagogue.
During the German occupation of Grodno, the synagogue, located in the center of the ghetto, was used by the Nazis as a gathering place for Jews before being sent to concentration camps and executed.
Since 1991, the building has been returned to the Jewish religious community.
In 2011, reconstruction began in the synagogue. Now services are held there, cultural events and meetings of the Jewish community are held.
The Grodno Synagogue is a monument of eclecticism. The facade of the building is decorated with magnificent stucco. The eclecticism of the building is very thoughtful and subtly weaves together elements of Renaissance, pseudo-Russian style and so-called Moorish architecture.

The interior space impresses with its volume and purity of solid white color. There is a small museum of Jewish history in Grodno. A place with a history, a hard and sad history.
