Great Choral Synagogue, Grodno
A functioning synagogue in the center of Grodno
The current building of the Great Choral Synagogue was built by Ilya Frunkin in 1902-1905 in one of the varieties of eclecticism — Moorish style on the foundations and using the walls of the previous synagogue.
During the German occupation of Grodno, the synagogue, located in the center of the ghetto, was used by the Nazis as a gathering place for Jews before being sent to concentration camps and executed.
Since 1991, the building has been returned to the Jewish religious community.
In 2011, reconstruction began in the synagogue. Now services are held there, cultural events and meetings of the Jewish community are held.
The Grodno Synagogue is a monument of eclecticism. The facade of the building is decorated with magnificent stucco. The eclecticism of the building is very thoughtful and subtly weaves together elements of Renaissance, pseudo-Russian style and so-called Moorish architecture.

The current building of the Great Choral Synagogue was built in 1902-1905 in one of the varieties of eclecticism — Moorish style on the foundations and using the walls of the previous synagogue. The interior space impresses with its volume and purity of solid white color. There is a small museum of Jewish history in Grodno. A place with a history, a hard and sad history.

Hello! Today, on September 18, 2023, my family and I decided to visit the Great Choral Synagogue in Grodno (we came from the Moscow region), the official website indicates the opening hours daily from 10-18.00, but we were greeted by closed doors at 14.55.I really wanted to visit the museum and show my teenage son the history of the ghetto and the Holocaust for the first time, but, unfortunately, I failed, (((, there will be no more opportunity. Good luck, peace and prosperity to all)

An amazing place! Very friendly people from the Jewish community of Grodno met us there, told us a little about the history of this building, what they continue to do for its further restoration and about the events that take place there. They have a lot of creative finds there. Needless to say, when an important historical building continues to live and serve living people, this is a much more pleasant case than stories with destitute "abandoned" ones.

Nicely. They didn't get inside, it was closed. But most likely because of the restoration. Of course, there are not enough landscaping shops around, etc., but there are no photos, there is a video I do not know how to attach

It is great that even a small Jewish community finds the strength and means to restore such a beautiful architectural structure)

A large choral functioning synagogue in the center of Grodno. It traces its history back to the 16th century and belongs to one of the oldest European synagogues.

A functioning synagogue. It was first built on this site in the 16th century. It completely burned down and was rebuilt. The second one also burned down, however, the walls remained. This building was built on their basis at the beginning of the 20th century. During the war, it was located on the territory of the ghetto. After the war, the synagogue was closed, there was a warehouse. It has now been transferred to the Jewish community, and restoration work is underway.

For some reason, the entrance is paid, but inside there are only bare walls and a man with strange beliefs...
