When I entered the Annunciation Church in Kutaisi, it immediately became somewhat quiet inside. Not even outside, but inside of me. There is a special atmosphere there: the smell of stone, a little incense, a soft twilight and the feeling that the walls really remember everything that happened to them. The history of this place is amazing. Once there was an old Orthodox church here, then the Catholics rebuilt it — they added columns, carvings, even Latin inscriptions above the entrance. Then the temple survived Soviet times, was closed, abandoned, and then, almost centuries later, it was returned to the Orthodox. But the past has not been erased — you can feel it all. In every detail, in every pattern, in the light that makes its way through the windows. I stood at the altar and looked at the angels carved in stone. It's like they're not really ours, not Georgian — and there's some touching truth about a place where two faiths, two cultures, two eras meet. There you just want to sit on a bench against the wall and be silent. To watch the sun's rays glide over old slabs, as pollen hangs in the air, and to think that everything in this world is passing away — but the beauty remains. If you will be in Kutaisi, be sure to go there. Not as a tourist, but as a person who is looking for something quiet, real.

It is a beautiful Orthodox church with a large garden around where you can relax in the shade. Inside there is an unusual architecture that is worth going in and admiring. The temple is interesting for its interweaving of Catholic and Orthodox styles. If you come to Kutaisi, be sure to visit this historic building on the banks of the Rioni River.
