Brussels Park, also known as Varandepark or Royal Park, is the oldest and largest public park in the center of Brussels. Its history begins in the Middle Ages, when this place was the hunting grounds of the Dukes of Brabant at the Coudenberg Palace. The modern park was created in the neoclassical style between 1776 and 1783, designed by architect Gilles-Barnabe Guimard and landscape designer Joachim Zinner. The park was part of a large-scale urban development project that included the creation of the Royal Square. The park has an area of 13.1 hectares, it has a rectangular shape and a characteristic French layout with clear alleys, symmetrical vistas and a central pond. In 1830, the park became the scene of fighting during the Belgian Revolution. In the 1930s, a bunker was built under the park, connected by tunnels to the Parliament building. The park is decorated with statues in the style of Greco-Roman mythology, numerous trees and shrubs. There are children's and sports grounds. They often go jogging here. There is a certain sadness in the atmosphere of the park, a sense of abandonment, few bright details, flower beds. Wide alleys are like street avenues. A statue of a lion that looks scared and doesn't have all its teeth preserved. The entrance groups are gray and strict. In general, it is clear that the park needs more attention and care.
