Level 30 Local Expert

On the eastern side of the square, on its main axis, in 1767-1769, the stone church of St. George was built in late Baroque forms. This monument, completed in 1880 and 1908, has been preserved in good condition and is a two-towered, single-nave church with choirs, covered with a cylindrical vault. The architectural decor of the church is represented by layered pilasters, profiled cornices, and a curved gable of a high attic in the middle of the facade. The towers are three-tiered, small in cross-section and strongly elongated, which gives dynamism to their composition. It is known from the inventory manuscripts that earlier the stone fence of the church and the temple were decorated with sculptures, and the interiors of the church were decorated with picturesque images. On the sides of the church, at an angle to it, there are two compact two—story buildings, in one of which there was a plebania (1770), and in the other - the apothecary's house. Such an arrangement of buildings is justified: it is subordinated to the architectural and planning idea of the organization of the square, closes its perspective with a monumental building front.
