Bedzin Castle is a medieval fortress located in the town of Bedzin (Silesian Voivodeship, Poland). It stands on a high hill above the Charna-Przemsa River and is one of the oldest defensive structures in the region. History - 13th century — the first fortifications on this site were built by order of Prince Vladislav Opolchik. - 14th century — King Casimir III the Great rebuilt the castle into a stone fortress to protect Poland's borders from Czech and Silesian raids. - XV–XVII centuries — the castle was repeatedly damaged (especially during the Swedish flood in 1655) and rebuilt. - 19th century — after fires and destruction, the castle fell into disrepair. - XX century — in the 1950s, a large-scale restoration was carried out, and the castle became a museum. Architecture The castle combines elements of Gothic and Renaissance. The main tower (donjon) served as the last line of defense. Fragments of the fortress walls, entrance gates and the palace have been preserved. Modernity Today, the Zagłębia Museum (Muzeum Zagłębia) operates in the castle, which presents: - an exposition on the history of the castle and the region, - a collection of antique weapons and armor, - an exhibition dedicated to the traditions of chivalry. The castle is open to tourists, jousting tournaments, festivals and cultural events are held here.
