The Palazzo della Mercanzia is one of the most beautiful buildings in Bologna, located just a few steps from the Asinelli and Garizenda towers. It is a striking example of Italian Gothic with elements of the early Renaissance. It was built at the end of the 14th century (1382-1391). Inside, the building is decorated with the coats of arms of the ancient guilds and workshops of the city. The Bologna Chamber of Commerce has been located here since its construction. Previously, trade disputes were resolved here and market rules were established. The facade is made of red brick and decorated with a white marble pulpit balcony. In the Middle Ages, commercial verdicts were read out from this balcony and new laws were announced. The notarized reference recipes of the Bolognese cuisine are officially kept in this palace. For example, here you can find the "same" recipe for Bolognese sauce (Ragù alla bolognese) and the exact dimensions of Tagliatelle noodles (its width should correspond to 1/12270 of the height of the Asinelli tower).
