Fort Elizabeth is one of the forts of the Russian naval fortress of Rochensalm, built in the 1790s on the island of Varissaari. It was destroyed by the Anglo-French squadron in 1855, during the Crimean War. Unlike the nearby Slava Fort, which can only be reached by guided tour, there is a regular ferry service between Varissaari and Kotka in summer. The island has a summer restaurant and a seaside beach. In addition to fragments of fortifications, the main and historical monuments of the island include an obelisk erected in 1940 in memory of the 2nd Battle of Rochensalm, the victory of the Swedish fleet over the Russian squadron of Prince Carl of Nassau-Siegen in 1790. In the restaurant and next to it, 18 cannons and fragments of the hull of the Russian rowing frigate St. Nicholas, which was lost in the same battle, are displayed by Finnish divers. During the Second World War, an anti-aircraft battery was located on the island, and anti-aircraft guns are displayed in memory of this.
