Children's playground of the Tailless Pelle in the English Park. Tailless Pelle is a favorite character of Swedish young children. It was invented by the writer Josta (Gustav) Knutsson (1908-1973), who wrote 30 books about Pella (only some of them have been translated into Russian). The playground was opened on the 75th anniversary of the publication of the first book (it was published back in 1939). The books are geographically linked to the central districts of Uppsala, so for young children, a special bureau conducts summer tours of the places of life of Pelle and his friends. Pelle is extremely popular in Uppsala, which is difficult to relate to a very simple children's story. There is a bronze sculpture of a Tailless Pelle in the city garden, and toys depicting it are sold in stores. Pelle's prototype was Knutsson's own tailless cat, as well as himself, Pelle's girlfriend Maya Creamy Nose portrays Knutsson's wife Erna. The cats from the fairy tale were the prototypes of Josta's friends. Only the main villain of the tale, the Evil Mons, and his henchmen include features of Hitler and Mussolini. The site recreated the Pelle house in Osgren Lane and the Mons house in Gropgren Lane (the alleys are real, although stone ones have already been built instead of wooden houses), the police station, Mrs. Rottstrom's pastry shop, the cathedral and other places described in the fairy tale.
