A small town by our standards, which is known only for the fact that Voltaire lived there. It was with his light hand that Ferney became Forney, because in those parts all settlements have "x" (x) at the end - Jex, Onex, Bernex (this is in writing, in pronunciation Ferney, Berne, etc.) Voltaire allegedly did not want to live like everyone else, and according to him, he is the most respected the owner of the apartment decided to rename from Fernex to Ferney. For tourists, there is a castle where Voltaire lived, a small old part of the city. The town was chosen by Voltaire because of its geographical location: the border with Switzerland, where housing was also purchased, is just a stone's throw away. When the next persecution began against Voltaire because of his next publication, he boarded a carriage and in 10 minutes was already beyond the reach of French justice. When I got tired of Geneva puritanism, I crossed the border again and voila, I was back in France. Nowadays, on Saturdays, there is a very lively market in the center, right around the Voltaire monument, where they sell vegetables, fruits, local products and clothes.
