The mosque was originally built on this site in the 10th century, and rebuilt in the 18th century. The columns for which the mosque is famous date back to the 10th - 14th centuries. On them you can see the bizarre carvings, a real masterpiece of the old Khiva school. In general, the mosque is unusual in that it does not have the usual architecture for mosques - no domes, no portals, nothing. Just walls, floor and ceiling. I read that the mosque of the 10th century looked exactly like this, and when it was rebuilt, they decided to preserve its historical appearance. The columns are very impressive. There are 213 of them, and if you are with a guide (or eavesdropping), then, of course, you will see the oldest, most ancient ones from the 10th century. The mosque is located in the very center of the Old Town and is certainly a must-see for any interested tourist.

Currently, only a fourth of the mosque is accessible due to renovation/reconstruction. Some data: The name "Juma Mosque" (from Arabic. — "Friday Mosque") is very common. Historically, this was the name of the main cathedral mosque of the city, where the ruler or imam held a Friday sermon (khutbah). The mosque is unique in its structure. It is a rectangular building with no courtyard or dome. The roof is supported by 213 carved wooden columns. The oldest columns, dating from the X-XII centuries, were taken from older buildings. The interior impresses with its "forest" of columns, creating a feeling of endless space.

The Zhuma Mosque in Khiva is an incredible place with a special atmosphere. I was most impressed by the wooden carved pillars: each one has a unique pattern, as if it carries its own story. Their majestic simplicity and silence inside the mosque create a timeless feeling. The light penetrates through the holes in the ceiling, playing on the carvings — a fascinating sight. Definitely worth seeing with your own eyes!
