The Town Hall, built in 1829, is the oldest surviving wooden town hall building in Finland and one of the first public buildings in the city. The design of the building is attributed to the Swedish architect Peter W. Palmroth (1765-1825), known for his work on civil architecture in Sweden and Finland at the beginning of the 19th century. After its completion, the town hall served for a long time as the center of municipal government and public life in Lappeenranta: meetings of the city council, meetings and city events were held here. In 1940, the building was damaged during the bombing, but then restored almost in its original form, while preserving a number of historical interior elements, including antique furniture and lighting. There are spacious halls inside, which are now used for cultural and festive events, weddings, conferences and exhibitions, and tourists can visit the town hall by appointment. The building lost its administrative functions after 1983, when the city services moved to the new City Hall.

The Old Town Hall. Architect Palmroth, 1829. Due to the poverty of the Wilmanstrand people, they were allowed, as an exception, to build a town hall out of wood, although the general rules in the Russian Empire required that the town hall be built of stone.
