The church was founded in 1768 under King Adolf Fredrik, and completed in 1774 under his son, Gustav III. Gustavian style with Rococo elements. It is famous for the ancient church cemetery, which is the first burial place of Rene Descartes. Descartes was invited in 1649 as a mentor and adviser to Queen Christina, but died a few months after his arrival. 16 years later, his remains were transported to France (though without his head, which was stolen by unknown people back in Sweden). Among other celebrities buried at the cemetery are sculptor Tobias Sergel, who participated in the decoration of the church, long-time leader of the Social Democrats Hjalmar Branting and Prime Minister Olof Palme, who was shot dead by an unknown person near this place in 1986. It is not easy to find Palme's grave - it is very modest.
