The Gustavus Adolphus Monument is located on the square of the same name, which is surrounded by buildings with amazing architecture. This monument is the first equestrian sculpture in Sweden, installed in 1791. Initially, there were no figures of the goddess Clio and Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna in the composition – they appeared a few years later.

Monument to Gustav II Adolf, the warrior king, one of the most famous Swedish kings. He ruled in 1611-1632. He was the grandson of King Gustav I Vasa, the founder of the modern Swedish state. Under Gustav II, Sweden reached the peak of its power, becoming an empire. The king won many military victories, died during the Thirty Years' War at the Battle of Lutzen. To this day, he is an object of hatred for the Swedish left and pride for the right. Under him, Russia lost Karelia and Izhora for almost a century. The monument was built in 1796 under King Gustav III, a great lover of history. The pedestal is decorated with bas-reliefs with portraits of four famous military leaders of the King's army - Karl Wrangel, Johan Bahner, Lennart Torstensson and Hans von Koenigsmark. At the foot of the monument is a sculptural composition, Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna dictates to the museum of the history of Clio a story about the exploits of the monarch.
