It was built on the site of the former Roman forum, according to legend, on the site of a former pagan temple dedicated to Apollo. The architecture combines the features of Romanesque and Gothic styles. The temple was built in the 12th century, and was subsequently rebuilt several times. One of the main shrines of the cathedral is the sarcophagus with the relics of St. Mitrius, located in the chapel of Cosmas and Damian.
