This large fortress stands on a high mountain, guarding the entrance to the harbor of Old Muscat. The fort was built by the Portuguese under King Philip I of Portugal in the 1580s after Muscat was sacked by Ottoman troops. The fort was captured twice by the Persians, who were invited to help one of the rival imams. The fortress was rebuilt several times. It is impossible to get inside, since the fort continues to be used for its intended purpose.
