Everyone knows that one of the well-deserved prides of Vitebsk is that it was the birthplace of the great Jewish, Russian and French artist Mark (Moses) She was walking. There are 2 main attractions dedicated to him in the city.: 1. The Chagall family House Museum (it is located on the other side of the Dvina River), where you can see their everyday life, utensils, furniture, etc. 2. The Chagall Art Center dedicated to his work. Inside, immediately after entering, you can watch a film about his life and work from childhood to death on the big screen (and Chagall lived for 98 years, showing many of his works). Actually, this is the main reason why you should at least visit this place. On the walls and on the first and especially on the second floor there is a small exhibition of his works, which he gave to the city, including the famous black-and-white illustrations for Gogol's "Dead Souls." The staff will be happy to tell you about each work, especially those depicting old Vitebsk. The exposure sometimes changes. At the checkout below, you can buy Chagall's book "My Life" from 1925, I highly recommend it as a gift - you will have great memories of visiting the city, and the book is written in such an extraordinarily beautiful poetic language with a lot of memorable images.

We couldn't get to Vitebsk when we were in Belarus for the first time. But on the second visit we went there specifically to visit the Marc Chagall art center. We were very satisfied. A small center with interesting works and broadcasts about the author. Even my husband liked it, although he is not a fan of the artist. Special thanks for the friendliness of the staff)

Although the museum is small, it will find something to surprise. My visit fell on the exhibition of original illustrations by Chagall to "Dead Souls" on the ground floor, on the second floor there is an exhibition of paintings not only by Chagall, but also by other artists. I was very pleased with the attention to detail: there are storage rooms at the entrance, in the halls themselves there are televisions with broadcasts about the life and works of artists, as well as benches(!) for visitors. As a result, even the elderly can come to be inspired by creativity without fear of not being able to stand the tour. Special admiration for souvenirs, sufficient choice and very creative variations. I really liked it, I definitely recommend it to visit

It is clear that Elena Stepanovna is professionally versed in Chagall's work, knows his biography thoroughly. The tour was very interesting, I didn't think that I could be so carried away. A very small and not very informative museum about Chagall. It is worth a visit if you are really lovers and connoisseurs of the artist's work. The ticket costs about 10 b.r., at the exhibition you can see some (not the most famous) paintings and illustrations of Dead Souls, which were executed by Chagall. Documentaries about the author are shown, and there is a gift shop. No toilet was found 🤣 It is located in a very pleasant and bright park, that's where I advise you to sit and get some fresh air)

At the time of my visit to Vitebsk in November 2024, this exposition did not catch my eye. One hall is dedicated to Marc Chagall, and it contains a small number of Chagall lithographs donated to the museum, including illustrations from Gogol's "Dead Souls," while other halls showcase works by contemporary artists. In the Chagall Hall, you can watch an interesting film about him. It's a bit insulting for Vitebsk, the city that inspired all of Chagall's work, echoing in almost all of his works, giving him a meeting with his muse and companion in life, does not have not only paintings by Marc Chagall, but even a complete collection of any series of his lithographs. It's certainly not the fault of the art center! Chagall presented the album with lithographs of "Dead Souls" to the Tretyakov Gallery, not Vitebsk.

The tour was in Belarusian (if you want, you could choose Russian), it was interesting to listen, learn about the work and life of Marc Chagall, look at his drawings. The structure inside is quite stylish, reconstruction is often carried out inside, drawings change every 3 months, so I advise you to go more than once!

So I went to this Chagall Art Center in Vitebsk, well, like a cultural one. In short, I think maybe something interesting will be shown, and not some kind of local culture. Anyway, we got in there, me and the boys, well, we're having some cultural fun. It's cool inside, it's bright, everything is neat, just like in a posh apartment of a rich Jew from an old movie. There are a lot of paintings, the colors are so bright and fantastic. Well, you know, there are people flying, horses with wings, crooked faces, but strangely beautiful. Chagall, it seems, was not just like that, but with a fantasy. One portrait in particular stuck with me — a man with a fish, or something... no, seriously, this isn't our karaoke pub, you have to strain your brain here. But I won't say that it was boring, on the contrary, it even dragged on a bit. Sovetskaya Street, 25 — yes, the building is old, Soviet, but inside it's like I've entered another reality. It was as if Chagall had walked out of this very house, looked at the grayness around him, and thought: "For the second time! I'm going to paint paradise, not this life." And he drew it. if you find yourself in Vitebsk, take a look. Even if it's not in the topic, you can still take a look. Maybe something new will clear up in my head. Just don't forget — the entrance is paid. Grab the money, have fun. Respect to Chagall, the man was with his head and soul.

There is not much of a Chagall. We got to the exhibition based on the biblical motives of Chagall - about 30 small paintings and the entire exhibition. It is interesting with a guide, without - there is nothing to do if you are not a superfan of creativity. On the second floor this time there were 2 halls with a local contemporary artist with a dozen identical paintings of naked women. It is clear that the museum needs to survive, but so far it is completely uninteresting in it, come up with some interactive pieces - maybe "assemble the picture piece by piece", guess the Chagall painting from a small fragment. Because there is "no smell of Chagall in the museum," and I would really like it to be in Vitebsk that this artist's awesome place would be, where else, if not here? I wish that crowds of tourists come to you, but for this you need to think and do something.

The employee refused to turn it on because there was an individual tour for 2 people. I waited 15 minutes for the film after reviewing the exhibition, and neither did the other visitors.

The place makes a sad impression. The building itself looks quite decent on the outside, but inside there is an untidy repair (walls with semi-dirty white wallpaper, the floor of the stairs needs to be climbed on half-bent, there are no restrooms, it is uncomfortable). On the ground floor there is a small exhibition of Chagall's graphic works with a TV, where the program of the Kultura channel about Chagall is playing. On the second floor there is a small exhibition of works by unknown contemporary artists (apparently "in the style of Chagall"). I would like to see a really bright art space named after such a great artist, especially in his hometown, creatively equipped and even with reproductions of his paintings, but with respect and admiration for the master! I wish this place to turn into such a space and become a point of attraction for Chagall fans from all over the world. The building has a potential that remains to be realized :) P.S. We wanted to take a tour, but first the guide was at lunch, and then she "needed half an hour to rest after lunch," as they said at the checkout… Perhaps a more complete immersion with the tour 🤷♀️

The story about the life and work of Marc Chagall was interesting and memorable. It is a pity that the exposition is poor. There are no authentic works at all, except for lithographs. I was unlucky, during my visit to the center, the accompanying exhibition was simply awesome! Two works by that author would be enough to understand his quest. The wish to the organizers of the exhibition is to take a more careful approach to the selection of exhibitors. They are displayed next to Chagall.
