According to legend, the Badami hills are the personification of the demon Ilvala and his younger brother Watapi. The ancient Indian epic says that once the king of these places was the demon Ilvala, who harbored hatred for the Brahmins and killed them out of revenge with the help of cunning. His trick was sophisticated and unusual – the demon turned his younger brother into a goat and served his meat to the brahmins as a treat. After making sure that everything was eaten, Ilvala brought Watapi back to life, and when he appeared laughing, the bodies of the priests were torn from the inside. That was until sage Agastya outsmarted them himself, digesting the Watapi before Ilvala could cast a spell. Fascinating views, ancient cave and temple complexes, parks and a lake, cozy narrow streets of the city - all this leaves an indelible impression. Cave temples, one of the most ancient in India.
