The Basilica of Señor Caído de Monserrate in Bogota was founded in 1640 on the initiative of the Spanish administrator Juan de Borja, then president of the New Kingdom of Granada. Initially, a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Montserrat was built on the top of Montserrat Mountain, but from the very beginning the center of religious worship shifted to the image of the Fallen Christ — El Señor Caído. In 1657, the wooden sculpture El Señor Caído was created for this chapel by the sculptor Pedro de Figueroa, a Colombian of Spanish origin. The sculpture depicts Jesus falling under the weight of the cross, and has become an object of mass veneration, especially during Lent and Holy Week. Since the 17th century, Montserrat Mountain has become a place of pilgrimage for believers who ascended on foot to the top as a sign of repentance and faith. In the 1920s, the reconstruction of the old temple began. The new basilica building was built between 1925 and 1955. The architecture is made in the neocolonial style, with a simple white facade and a bell tower in harmony with the natural landscape of the Andes. The altar inside the basilica is decorated with the sculpture of Señor Caído, installed in the central niche, above which the dome rises. Montserrat Mountain is located at an altitude of 3,152 meters above sea level, and the basilica has become not only a religious, but also a symbolic dominant of the city. A funicular was opened in 1929 and a cable car in 1955 to facilitate access for pilgrims and tourists. Despite this, thousands of people still climb the 2.4—kilometer-long hiking trail, especially during Semana Santa, the Catholic Holy Week. The basilica is the official shrine of the Archdiocese of Bogota and is open daily. Regular Spanish-language masses are held inside, especially on Sundays and religious holidays. Around the basilica there are stations of the Cross, souvenir shops, observation decks and small cafes. In addition to its religious function, the Señor Caído Basilica serves as an important cultural site — in 1975 it was included in the city's cultural heritage list. I went up both ways. It's a bit steep to crawl on foot, of course.

A basilica where you listen to every word of a pastor reading a prayer. And you seem to understand almost everything. The Christian commandments are unchangeable in all languages of the world. Live according to your conscience and do good quietly.…
