One of the most spectacular sights of Xi'an (Shaanxi Province), the oldest city of the 4 ancient capitals of China, which has changed many names in its history, is, of course, the City Wall. It was built on the old foundation in 1374-1378, at the behest of the 1st emperor of the Ming Dynasty. Under his rule, Xi'an, being in the capital status, acquired strategic importance, and the wall around it had to be made higher and stronger, with watchtowers, drainage drains and ramparts. The brick wall, forming a rectangle around the perimeter, stretched for 13.7 km, grew to 12 m in height with a thickness of 15-18 m at the base. There were fortified gates with drawbridges across a deep moat with water on the sides of the world. The battlements at the top (there are about 6 thousand of them) served for archery and observation of the enemy, some towers were connected by tunnels, and special passages were designed for horses. In the 14th century, such a powerful fortification served as a reliable protection for the city. But already in the XV century . Xi'an ceased to be the capital, and the wall lost its defensive significance. Over the past 6 centuries, it has been well preserved. A city has grown beyond its borders, and a park has been laid out at the foot after the restoration. It's great to walk along the wall, compared to the Great Wall of China, it's wide, and there are many times fewer people here. And if it was raining (as we were lucky to be), only the most persistent dared to do so. There are red lanterns along the wall, in addition to the Bell and Drum Towers, there are a number of buildings with museum exhibits, which are also interesting to look at. There are souvenirs in the modern pavilions, and outside the building there are blocks with old houses, contrasting with skyscrapers. The rain, of course, darkened the picture, but it did not spoil the impression. It's very atmospheric, and we liked it.
