The Tag Museum. Birka is a Viking city that existed in the 8th-10th centuries on the island of Bjorke, in the middle of Lake Melaren. In the 9th century, the "apostle of the North", the Benedictine monk Ansgar, preached here. The island can only be reached by water. The easiest way to go on an excursion tour is by boat, which departs in the morning from the pier near Stockholm City Hall, and returns the tourists back in the evening. Good weather and warm clothes are mandatory - it's quite cold on the lake. There is a small museum and a reconstructed Viking village on the island. In addition to the museum tour, there is a short field trip once a day in English (and once in Swedish). There is not much left of the Tag (hardworking Swedish farmers have long since plowed the fields and laid stones along the boundary line), but the general outline of the settlement is clear. You can go to the place where there was a fortification (borg), there is a large Celtic cross dedicated to St. Ansgar. There is a restaurant and a more budget stall. A souvenir shop from the Viking age, which you will rarely find anywhere (except in the Museum of Old Uppsala and the Gustavianum Museum, but there the assortment is more modest).
