With its thousand-year history, this world's largest Buddhist temple could well claim to be one of the wonders of the world. After all, this is not just a pyramidal structure, millions of stone blocks still needed to be decorated with thousands of ornaments and bas-reliefs, as well as hundreds of Buddha statues - the stupas are perforated and inside each sits a Buddha. The work of the stone carvers is amazing in its detail. Incredibly, the temple stood covered with ashes for almost 900 years. The most likely reason is the dangerous proximity to the Doomsday volcano Merapi, which is active and regularly erupts. Nevertheless, the temple was excavated and it is impressive if you look at the giant hill. The rules for visiting vary from year to year, but in any case, it is advisable to take tickets with a climb to the top and in the morning.

A beautiful architectural artifact. Access is time-limited due to conservation measures. It would be especially interesting to go around each tier and inspect all the bas-reliefs. The scale and design are impressive, as are the landscapes around. Access is through a modern museum and recreation complex designed to accommodate numerous pilgrims on Buddhist holidays.

1. They take three skins off tourists. Very expensive compared to other prices in Indonesia. 2. There is no point in taking tickets downstairs just to walk around the temple, you must definitely take a ticket with the opportunity to go upstairs, they cost almost the same (~ 2000r and 2250 respectively). But the upstairs tickets run out quickly, there are only 1,200 seats per day, and you can arrive without being able to get upstairs. 3. But it's really beautiful upstairs. 4. The chicken church nearby is much cooler and almost free.
