The current fortifications of the citadel were built by Ottoman engineers in the XVII-XVIII centuries. on the ruins of the fortress of the Knights of the Order of the Hospitallers of St. John, built five centuries earlier, in the XII–XIII centuries. The citadel looks impressive and is in good condition. It is not very clear who to thank for this - the Ottoman engineers or the current restorers. Probably both. In any case, a walk through the fortress is interesting. Unless, of course, the day is too sunny, in the sense of not too hot...

This is the most impressive building in the old town of Acre! The fortress is located in the northern part of the city. It was built by the ruler of Akko Dahir al-Omar in 1750 on the ruins of the fortress-monastery of the Hospitallers. The height of the citadel is 40 m.It mainly includes buildings from the Ottoman period. The fortress served as a palace for the rulers of Akko, as well as weapons depots and barracks. Subsequently, a prison was located here, in which Baha'u'llah, the founder of the Baha'i religion, and Zeev Jabotinsky, a writer, poet and creator of the Jewish Legion, who fought in the First World War as part of the British army, were imprisoned. Many members of the Haganah militant organization were captured by the British authorities and thrown into a dungeon. This and the history of the struggle of the Jews in the period preceding the formation of Israel are told by the expositions of the city museum of prisoners of the underground, which is located in the Citadel. The preservation of the fortress to this day is very impressive!..

Picturesque ruins. A big plus is the wild environment. A lot of things can be climbed completely unassisted.
