Originally installed as a triumphal column, it turned out to be a long-suffering reality. At the consecration of the column, a golden statue of Emperor Constantine the Great with a crown crowned its top. A Holy Nail from the Cross of the Lord was fused into this crown, and artifacts from Noah's axe, Moses' chair, and Pallas Athena's amulet from Troy were immured under the base of the column. The statue of the emperor was replaced with a cross after a series of falls from earthquakes and lightning strikes. But the cross was also removed from the top by the Ottoman Turks. The Crusaders also distinguished themselves. They tried to find artifacts under the base, it is not known for certain whether this venture was successful, but they nevertheless tore off part of the bas-relief from the base and took it away. Today, this fragment can be seen in St. Mark's Cathedral in Venice. And the column was burning, the traces of the fire remained visible. Finally, the cracked column was reinforced with iron hoops, and its base was reinforced with masonry. As a result of all these twists and turns, the column changed its name one by one: the column with the nail, the column with the cross, the burnt column, and finally the girdled column. It is worth taking a look at this peculiar symbol of Istanbul. Interestingly, the time of its inspection is much shorter than the time of its description.
