The building itself is simply magnificent and surrounded by paradisiacal Stalinist Empire buildings with fountains. Unfortunately, there are some strange shops inside with greetings from the past. Perhaps this store is convenient for Minsk residents, but I expected that now I would enter and gasp at both the interiors and the goods, but I was pleased only with the Belarusian cosmetics store on the ground floor.

If I come to get a coat, I should see the coat and preferably be able to choose my size. And I see a bunch of round hangers, on which skirts, sweaters, jackets and coats are randomly hanging. I need to go through the entire department, inspect every hanger. Do you seriously think that I won't get bored? It feels like the assortment has been posted, like non-reading people putting books on a shelf - by the color of the cover. But the store is not an exhibition. The goal is to sell the product, not to impress the customer with color spots. I crossed GUM off the list of places where it is convenient to dress.

The current store building began to be built after the war. And it only opened to customers on November 6, 1951. But the name GUM itself is much older. It was opened in 1934 in the building of the former Polish Bank. The architects Geghart and Melegi designed the building in the style of Stalinist classicism, which was popular at the time. In the early days of its operation, giant queues lined up at the doors a few hours before opening: for post-war Minsk residents, GUM became not just a store, but a museum and a temple. The trading equipment was made of precious woods, and each of the three floors used its own breed. Parquet floors, mirrors, amazing chandeliers, in which fluorescent lamps were already installed (GUM was the first object of civil architecture in Minsk, where daylight lamps were used) – all this created a festive atmosphere, instantly turning the lobby of the department store-palace guarded by a burly doorman into the main meeting place for lovers. Minsk old-timers recall that in the first weeks of GUM's operation, the money supply was so huge that the bills could not fit in standard cash register compartments. Then laundry vests were put in the cash registers, into which the cashiers imperceptibly dropped money. However, even today, more than 12 thousand purchases are made in the department store every day. I recommend you to visit!

One of the disadvantages is the "Soviet" attitude of sellers: they loudly discuss their business, you often hear loud phrases from the category of "Vitalieuna, are you going anywhere?", etc. It feels like you're in a village store. And nothing has changed for many years. This, of course, adds color to the Soviet building, but it does not decorate it at all. I would really like to make a reference to the good Soviet style, as it was done at GUM in Moscow. Nevertheless, our Belarusian GUM is an interesting historical place, and not just a store in the area.

I ate many times in the canteen on the 4th floor, the food is delicious, but I didn't like the soups.. The canteen is closed on Sunday, and on Saturday it happens that they give yesterday's food, so it's better to come here for lunch on weekdays. By the way, food prices, if you eat every day, are not super cheap, on average: mini salads 2-4 r, soups about 4p, meat 7-8, vegetables 3-5p, casserole 4.7r, side dishes 1-3p, desserts and pastries 1-5 r. With regard to the interior: in comparison with the GUM of five years ago, the changes are already significant. The first floor has been renovated and now it looks very decent - like in a modern shopping center. It is planned to renovate all floors and improve the range of women's clothing by 2026. Still, to finalize it from the outside - and there will be a candy)
