Continuing to walk around old Havana, and practically without moving away from Plaza de Armas, I reached the two-story palacio de los Capitanes Generales and immediately began an external and internal inspection. The seat of power on the island under the colonial Spaniards and a little later, struck with its baroque beauty and interior decoration. This 22-meter-high quadrangular building, with an arcade with arches and columns, a huge courtyard, a large portico, magnificent Throne rooms and Mirrored halls, and a huge number of utility rooms, has long been the residence of captain generals, governors, and in short, the Spanish governors in Cuba. Construction was started in 1773 on the site of the Parroquial Mayor Church under Governor Felipe de Fondesviel and Ondeano, Marquis de la Torre by Cuban engineer Antonio Fernandez Trebejos y Zaldivar, and completed in 1792 under Luis de las Casas y Aragorri (that is, through 5 governors). However, everyone who was in charge of Cuba after the Spaniards was also comfortably housed in this rather large building. The American military governor was based here during the occupation of Cuba by the United States Army in the period from 1899 to 1902, and then the government of the independent Cuban Republic and its president. After some time, all branches of government moved to separate buildings (the president was the first to leave in 1920), and the palace moved to the municipal level, under the jurisdiction of the Havana City Hall. Since 1967, a very interesting historical and architectural City Museum has been located here. The marble monument to Don Christopher Columbus, standing in an open courtyard, attracts special attention from tourists. Interestingly, during the visit of King Juan Carlos I de Bourbon of Spain and Queen Doña Sofia of Greece and Denmark in 1997, the Spanish monarchs declined offers to sit in the historic royal chairs installed in the Throne Room of the palace. And yet, in the west wing of this government building, there was originally a prison (although it was closed in 1894), where else in the New World..

A beautiful building in Old Havana on the Square of Arms. The construction was completed in 1791, but there were alterations and additions. The official residence of the Governor of Cuba. A classic building in the colonial Baroque style. Very interesting interiors inside, carefully preserved since the 18th century and a beautiful courtyard (pictured below).
