Это первая мечеть, построенная турками после взятия Константинополя. В 1766 году землетрясение серьезно повредило мечеть. Поэтому в 1798 году османский султан Селим III приказал разрушить остатки храма и отстроить все заново. Новую мечеть строил зодчий Узун Хусеин-ага, открыли святыню в 1800 г.
