This is the first mosque built by the Turks after the capture of Constantinople. In 1766, an earthquake severely damaged the mosque. Therefore, in 1798, the Ottoman Sultan Selim III ordered the destruction of the remains of the temple and rebuilt everything. The new mosque was built by architect Uzun Husein-agha, and the shrine was opened in 1800.
