Yevle Castle was built in the 16th century under King Johan III and was richly decorated with towers and spires. In 1727, the castle burned down. It was reconstructed in the middle of the XVIII century in a much more modest form, without towers and decorations. Currently, the office of Governor Lena Yevleborg (who is also considered the royal commandant of Yevle Castle) is located in the main building of the castle. In one of the other buildings of the castle, a former prison, there is a part of the Swedish Prison Museum dedicated to the prisons of the XVIII century. (The second part is located in a nearby building, a former 19th-century prison.)
