An amazing place, an ancient monastery located in a rock. The first monastery on this site was generally built in the IV century A.D., but was completely destroyed. The current one was built in the 13th - 14th centuries. In general, I am always genuinely surprised when I see monuments that have been preserved since those distant times - and this is despite all the turbulence in any country in the world! And the tourism industry is relatively young, because some amazing monuments were restored and opened only in the XX century. One of the amazing features of such monuments is a completely different one... not even the architecture, but rather the approach to their creation. Here, in Geghard, there are no rich altars, no multicolored paintings, and no other attributes indicative of wealth in the secular sense. But the feeling of a cell is present everywhere here. Despite the tourists (of whom there are many), you can always be alone here, and it doesn't matter whether you believe it or not. And the light here is absolutely amazing. There is no artificial light here, but look at the photo - how beautifully the light penetrates here! Literally cutting through the darkness, when this light can - again, literally - be seen! A little bit about organizational issues. I would recommend combining a trip to Geghard with a trip to Garni, which is an old monument nearby and the only pagan temple in modern Armenia. Before the trip, I would recommend reading at least basic information about Geghard and Garni or taking a guide. It's an amazing old place that I think you should visit if you come to Yerevan. Here you will see beauty without pretentiousness and - who knows? - maybe you'll think about something that you usually don't have time for.

We have been to Armenia so many times, but we only got here this time — and obviously for good reason. The temple itself is carved right into the rock, and inside it feels like you are entering another dimension: cool, dim, stone vaults and the echo of footsteps. This time we caught a wedding, and the candlelight made the atmosphere truly atmospheric. There is something to see both inside and out. The place is strong.
