Gevorg Chaush (real name Gevorg Ghazaryan) is a leader of the Armenian national movement, one of the most famous Fedayeen leaders. He was born in the mountainous region of Sasun (Bitlis Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire), in the village of Mktenk in the Bsanats region. The exact date of birth is not known, but it is assumed that he was born around 1870. In one of the battles, he killed ceaus (a police official), for which he received his nickname. In 1894, he participated in the first Sasun self-defense and especially distinguished himself in the battle of the village of Talvorik. He was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison. In 1896, he escaped from a prison in Musha and went to Sasun, where he joined the Akhpyur Serob detachment. After the murder of Akhpur Serob in 1899, Gevorg and Andranik Ozanyan tracked down and destroyed the traitors who poisoned him. During the Second Sassoon Uprising of 1904, he commanded the southern section of the defense. From 1904 to 1907, he was the chief commander of the Armenian forces in the Taron-Sasun region. He was an adherent of the idea of a Kurdish-Armenian alliance against the Turks and had good relations with many Kurdish leaders. Gevorg Ceaus enjoyed great fame as one of the most prominent heroes of the national liberation struggle of the Armenian people. He died on May 27, 1907 during the Battle of Sulukh. He was buried in Musha.
