Schloss Glücksburg is one of the most beautiful water castles in Northern Europe, located in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Built in the Renaissance, it seems to grow out of the lake, giving the impression of a fairy-tale palace. History of the castle Foundation: The castle was built in 1582-1587 by order of Duke Johann the Younger of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg on the site of a former Cistercian monastery. 🔹 Name: "Glucksburg" means "Castle of happiness" (Glück — "happiness", Burg — "castle"). 🔹 Dynastic role: The castle became the residence of one of the branches of the Oldenburg dynasty, whose representatives ruled in Denmark, Norway and even Greece. Architecture 🔹 Style: Northern Renaissance with elements of late Gothic. 🔹 Features: - Four round towers at the corners. - Red brick and white decorative elements. - Surrounded by an artificial lake, creating the effect of a "floating" castle. Interesting facts In the 19th century, the castle was the center of political negotiations between Denmark and Prussia. The future King Frederick VII of Denmark grew up here. In the 20th century, the castle was used as a girls' school and then as a barracks.
