Gonio Fortress was built in the 1st century AD. It can be said that it has been standing since the time of Jesus Christ. It has a square shape and is well restored. We visited it in 2018 and 2023 and noted that there were more flowers, exhibits, cleaner and more well-groomed territory. The entrance costs 5 lari ~ 200r. There are few people inside, there is a fountain with drinking water and a large Parking lot nearby. Since ancient times, fortresses were built with towers so that they could hide from the enemy. In the Bible, a strong tower is compared to God, as he is the most reliable protection for people. "The name of Jehovah is a strong tower. The righteous man flees into it and finds protection" (Proverbs 18:10). Literal structures are destroyed over time, and God, his support and protection are eternal. It is good that the Gonio fortress is being preserved and restored for future descendants, I recommend visiting it and taking a quiet walk along the ancient walls.

It's not entirely clear why this is SUCH a landmark. There is absolutely nothing, just a field, a toilet and some kind of freshly made tiny museum with "antiquities", surrounded by walls on four sides. Nothing special. I don't recommend it. There are a lot of places in Georgia that are more worthy of visiting, this is practically the first place from the end in the ranking of attractions. 🤷♀️

A great place, although the museum was closed for repairs, but the walls alone were enough. Very close to Batumi, definitely to visit

A time machine and attention! - She's working! A great opportunity to travel back a couple of millennia and see the fortress through the eyes of a Roman, if you have imagination and a proper level of imagination, of course) come with children, walk between well-preserved buildings, fortress walls, relax in the shade of towers and preserved trees. A small museum, decorations of the Roman legionary camp, a real chariot, catapult, ballista, shields and spears included. A great place for family time.

A beautiful place, definitely worth a visit. According to legend, the Apostle Matthew is buried on the territory of the fortress, and a monument has been erected here. We also saw how kiwifruit grow in nature.

A unique, damn old fortress, dating back to the Roman Empire. There is always a parking place around, an adequate cost of visiting, everything is conveniently organized inside. A separate feature is the abundance of various fruit trees on the territory. Of course, it is better not to visit in the heat.

Gonio Fortress is an interesting historical place. There are archaeological excavations and a museum on site. The well-groomed territory with beautiful flowers creates a pleasant atmosphere. Inside the fortress, you can see various antiques in a mini-museum. There is also a small chapel, ruins and other interesting sites to explore.

A very beautiful, albeit small, fortress. A small exhibition of archaeological finds inside. The walls can be climbed in many places. Anyway, passage is allowed almost everywhere. Adults 8 lari, children 3 lari. Across the street from the entrance to the fortress is a small outdoor cafe with inexpensive cold delicious beer.

The fortress is perfectly preserved, although it is about 2 thousand years old according to the official history. It occupies a large area where you can walk, climb towers, walk along ancient stairs.

I definitely recommend going to just a unique structure, especially the ancient Roman excavation of underfloor heating was etched into my memory. For me, it was just a discovery, and the perfect preservation of the entire infrastructure that supported the life of the Roman legionnaires is a very interesting story and many interesting educational exhibits

Admission in August 2023 is 8lari for adults. The toilet is wonderful on site. Required to visit)) A beautiful central alley, at the far end of the fortress is a reconstruction of wooden medieval weapons. Several excavation sites and the restored perimeter of the fortress. In general, it is not a mandatory place to visit. But this is my strictly personal opinion.

Cleaned and restored. Now festivals and events are sometimes held there. Definitely worth a visit. You can get from Batumi by bus or minibus 16, but they are quite crowded. A taxi will cost about 10 GEL. Nearby is the sparsely populated Gonio beach.

For the first time on real excavations in a fortress built in the 1st century AD by the Romans on the site of an ancient settlement, and later rebuilt by the Ottomans. The legendary Heinrich Schliemann, who excavated Troy, was interested in her. An exciting sight! The stones stand in orderly rows as if the masonry was done recently. To touch the past, to become a part, even for a moment, of this huge military fortification by the standards of the past. Stroll among the ancient tombs, thermal baths, stables, barracks and aqueducts. How everything was thought out and coordinated, the enemies could not break through the thickness of the walls, the siege could last for months! The fortress has a museum with a collection of found exhibits: gold and silver coins from different eras, jewelry, fragments of utensils, elements of weapons and horse harness, and much more. An open-air exposition of a Roman camp, a sports ground, weapons, equestrian sports and devices for protecting the fortress: a catapult, a crossbow, and other small arms. According to the Scriptures, one of the twelve apostles, Matthew, is buried in the fortress. People still come here with their hardships and joys. The territory is equipped for pleasant walks even at night, there is a garden with fruit trees, wonderful alleys and walking paths are laid out. You can climb the ancient stairs to the wall of the fortress, walk along its perimeter, look around the surroundings, the sight of which leads to complete delight. Enjoy one of the many wonders of Georgia, which was visited by the Argonauts themselves.

A small but beautiful fortress. The roses are planted awesome. There are many southern fruit trees. But an hour is enough for an eye examination. There is a gorgeous empty beach right in front of the fortress. And not far away, closer to the Turkish border, there is a cool waterfall. St. Andrew the First-Called, in my opinion.

The entrance fee is 10 lire. You can climb all the turrets. There are a couple of small museums with all sorts of potsherds, in Russian it is written only about the apostle :) the rest is in Georgian and English (and thanks for that) there is an audio guide, but I didn't take it, I can't say anything

An interesting place . Entrance is paid for an adult of 5 lari , a student of 1 lari . There is a free toilet on the territory of the fortress, a free photo area where you will be given to try on armor, there is also a well, a catapult, crossbows and a chariot with which you can also take a photo. Of the disadvantages, these are very steep steps (there is a handrail) and the fact that everything is not yet restored.

For a symbolic 50 rubles, you can visit this sample of typical Roman architecture. Only the walls of the fortress remain, all the buildings are destroyed and you can only see the excavation of the foundations and remnants of the sewer system (at the entrance you will be kindly given a plan indicating the functionality of each building). There is also a small museum in the fortress with artifacts and reconstructions of military equipment of those times.

The fortress does not look like it has survived the centuries, somehow it looks more like a tourist decoration. At the same time, the mood of history and the past centuries is preserved. Everything is in good condition, walls, excavations, paths. Lots of roses. You can climb the walls. I recommend.
