Back in 1923, the chief rabbis of Israel discussed plans to build a large central synagogue in Jerusalem.Only 30 years later, in 1958, when the building of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, Heikal Shlomo, was built, a small synagogue was founded within its boundaries.As time passed, there was a need for more space. The main sponsor of the construction of the new synagogue was Sir Isaac Wolfson, a Jewish philanthropist from Great Britain. The Wolfson family dedicated the synagogue to the memory of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust and the fallen IDF soldiers. The synagogue accommodates 850 men and 550 women. A huge private collection of mezuzahs is on display in the lobby. What magnificent stained glass windows there are!
