When you go by train to Moscow, the train stops there at the border. Border control- passport verification. They are not allowed to leave the carriage. The train costs 2-3 hours. Then Belarus goes on, and then Russia is not far away.

I would not advise former politicians to arrive in Belarus by railway transport - there is a great risk of being thrown off the train and being subjected not only to a thorough search of things, but also of the phone. And at best, follow on at your own expense..
