The city includes the territory of the former German colony of Traubenfeld (German Traubenfeld — Grape field) founded in 1812 by German settlers. In 1942, after the deportation of the Germans, the colony was renamed the village of Yenikend[4][5]. There are cement, asphalt, canning and wine factories in the city, as well as an oil processing plant.
