This is not a square, but the burial place of the Armenians of Constantinople. The Pangalti Armenian Cemetery was located on this site, where Armenians were buried for centuries. The Surb Hakob Armenian Hospital was located at this place

The cemetery was so large that Armenian graves are still being discovered in Taksim Square during the ongoing construction.
And, indeed, during the excavations carried out as part of the restoration of Taksim Square, 16 tombstones of an ancient Armenian cemetery were discovered. This was reported by the Turkish media back in 2013. However, the presence of more than a dozen tombstones did not confuse modern Turkish experts. Representatives of the Istanbul Department of Archaeological Museums, having studied the excavation site, came to the conclusion that "this object is located within the urban area, and no cultural layer has been found in the works carried out on Taksim Square and the slope of Kazanchi to date.
