Tegher (Teher or Dher) is a monastery located in the Aragatsotn region on the slope of Mount Aragats in the village of the same name. The monastery was founded in the 13th century on the initiative of the Armenian Princess Mamakhatun, the wife of the founder of the Vachutyan dynasty. The inscription on the vestibule of the main church, carved by her order, shows that the churches and chapels of the complex were built in memory of her and her husband. In 1467, the monastery was surrounded by fortress walls, added for defensive purposes. In 1949, the monastery was severely damaged by an earthquake, but was later rebuilt. Today, the complex is under the care of the Armenian Apostolic Church. The monastery consists of the domed church of St. Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God, built in 1213) and a vestibule, attached to it in 1221. Strict forms and almost complete absence of decorative decoration. Two chapels above the roof of the narthex in the north-western and north-eastern corners are a rare phenomenon in Armenian architecture, due to the desire to honor the memory of the dead buried in the narthex. The chapels are named after the Archangels Gabriel and Michael. In the courtyard of the monastery are the ruins of the chapel of St. Nicholas. Hovhannes of the XIII–XVII centuries. The name of the monastery comes from the word Deher (literally — "medicines"), as wild herbs, including medicinal ones, were collected in the vicinity. It is built of dark gray basalt, has a rich dark color.
