In our understanding, this is a cathedral. It was built recently according to all the canons required for religious Orthodox buildings. Majestic, austere, towering with dignity in detached silence in the midst of a seething crowd of tourists in the old cozy Sozopol. In the cathedral, those entering become quiet and thoughtful, gaining a sense of peace and joy of life

The church was built by the Tryavna master Ust Gencho in 1889 for the needs of refugees from areas that were subordinate to the Constantinople (Tsaregrad) Patriarchate (this gave the temple a second unofficial name – "church for refugees"). At the time of construction, the church was located outside the city and services were held there only on major holidays. The building is a single-nave basilica 25 m long, 13 m wide and 12 m high. At a later time, a bell tower with a height of about 23 meters was added. The church houses a carved iconostasis by the masters of the Debar school of the XVII-XVIII century, which was transported here from the destroyed in the XIX century Sozopol church of St. Nicholas. St. John the Theologian. After 1944, the church was turned first into a city museum, then into a warehouse and finally into a museum of underwater archaeology. Since 1989, the building has been returned to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. After a lengthy renovation in 2011, the church was reopened to visitors and worship services
