The House of Unity, which for many decades was the "People's House" (the abbreviated name used by Latvians, Russians, Jews, Poles, etc. - "Backgammon"!). This building housed a central two-story department store, the Daugavpils Theater, the City House of Culture, a swimming pool, a huge library, and a fine art studio... Surely there's something else - I can't remember everything! Here we watched touring performances of Riga theaters, listened to concerts of the Daugavpils Symphony Orchestra, prepared for the national swimming competitions, borrowed "necessary books" from the library. Truly - the people's house!
