Upland community (in modern spelling - Upland, Uplands nation). One of the 13 fraternities (nationer) Uppsala University. The communities were formed in the 17th century on a territorial basis (more precisely, according to the names of the dioceses of the Swedish Church). Participation in fraternities is voluntary (a small membership fee is required), but almost all students, even foreigners, enroll in the fraternity upon admission to the university. The fraternity is a student club located in a prestigious building with living rooms, a banquet hall, a library, a garden, etc. The community has its own housing fund, a mutual aid fund, and its own plot in the Old Cemetery. Members of the fraternity celebrate holidays together (for example, Valborg), celebrate important events (for example, protection of dissertations), arrange official banquets (gaskies). Successful graduates often financially support their community. Upland community was founded in 1642. It contains two buildings (1825 and 1950) and a garden. The monuments "Mother" (sculptor Carl Eld) and "Eagle and Ganymede" (sculptor Carl Milles) are installed in the garden. There is a medallion on the garden fence depicting the poet Anna Lenngren (sculptor Tobias Sergel), whose house was in this place in the XVIII century. There is a restaurant, a bar and a cafe in the premises of the fraternity, there is a brass band, paintings with views of Uppsala are on display. Members of Upland's fraternity were chemist Svante Arrhenius, UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold, Archbishop and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nathan Söderblom.
