How Yango Maps rates traffic

When mapping a route, Yango Maps analyze the traffic data to take into account traffic congestion, and to show traffic jams. The information comes directly from the city streets: every few seconds mobile devices running Yango Maps send their geographical coordinates, driving direction and speed data to us. All data is anonymized, which means that the devices do not submit any information about the car or its owner. Using this data, our analyzer software models a car's route with information about speed of travel. We call it a track.

Tracks are checked by a special algorithm to filter out any that don't reflect the real road situation. If а driver stops or slows down not because of traffic, but because they either need to buy something at the store or don't want to miss an important turn, the algorithm understands this and tosses out the information from this car when creating an overall picture.

Verified tracks are processed by special aggregator software. Every two minutes the aggregator collects all the information into a single picture, and that's what drivers see in Yango Maps.

In large cities, Yango Maps show road congestion on the map and also rates it in points. The score is calculated as follows. The routes for the streets of each city are created in advance and include main highways and avenues. For each route there is a reference time, which is the time it takes to travel if roads are clear and you don't violate driving regulations. After evaluating traffic conditions in the whole city, the aggregator calculates how the real driving time is different from the reference time. The traffic score in points is calculated based on the differences for all routes.
